When we first entered the ski-field we had absolutely no intentions of going snowboarding, we hadn't even thought about we were supposed to be going on a "ski trip". Of course at the very end we decided why not and went for it despite neither of us having any previous experience, we weren't taking lessons either so we went over to the course without the slightest clue on how to slow down or avoid crashing. We were both having second thoughts about choosing to use snowboards when at about the tenth run neither of us had manged to get down the hill without falling.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij1WdXr6I-SjtTGmf3e4-4NCQPxYbzUElxe5-94J2yfhEvifii77E4rMnoRY361PrK9OFrn5uRom3d5P72lTnfmj370D3VIA7q3Ebwo7uN0Ir7oTqziKSVUndUJ4kMZAyVIfc/s1600/andrew+sit+snow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij1WdXr6I-SjtTGmf3e4-4NCQPxYbzUElxe5-94J2yfhEvifii77E4rMnoRY361PrK9OFrn5uRom3d5P72lTnfmj370D3VIA7q3Ebwo7uN0Ir7oTqziKSVUndUJ4kMZAyVIfc/s1600/andrew+sit+snow.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
My approach to it was that if i just hurled down the slope then at least I'd only crash once whereas David chose to try to go slow and get down the the hill properly. In the long run this helped him because eventually he could get down the hill without face-planting at the bottom it took me a little longer to get there.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-hXfIKvMjuC_JdrR5S-RW2VWytaa9dFOJTTw5w_TRnXWCLn-6WJp5fO_7pus5AvGOD8Nw9SZcVqmIrLn5MdYaS4HCuApHFlQlDNyL5213VIC6VVkCLzQHRy7tK_lM-xid7Hg/s1600/Snowboard+stand.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-hXfIKvMjuC_JdrR5S-RW2VWytaa9dFOJTTw5w_TRnXWCLn-6WJp5fO_7pus5AvGOD8Nw9SZcVqmIrLn5MdYaS4HCuApHFlQlDNyL5213VIC6VVkCLzQHRy7tK_lM-xid7Hg/s1600/Snowboard+stand.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then decided to attempt a more difficult slope. Unfortunately for us it was not nearly as easy as we had anticipated I'd say due to our 2 attempts on that course we both ended up sore in the morning. With only about an hour remaining at the slopes we decided to try to have maximum entertainment on the little slope so we built a small ramp. It made the course more difficult and more fun after hitting a few jumps we had to pack our bags and depart the beautiful scenery.</div>

Here I'll post some notes about my experience with Airbnb. My first foray into the "share" economy. Not sure about that really, as ebay, Craigslist and a number of other well established sites are all about putting individuals in touch with each other to do commerce. But there's a new round of discussion about these sites, thanks to the rise of Uber, Sidecar, Freelancer, and so on. Given that we've now used the Airbnb service in 4 locations, I'm getting a feel for it. </div>
<div sab="127">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQokp1F5YVKJCAn5ztDbewNntPsGTk4-9KjwK8IgAzp4t2GaSpNfO1OInG3BuzvWOkAwiBgbFf0WHX3bCI-5ryT_uiJwl8V4nZTESt1RucI9BHfI2rQR3Rj6G_Y7QP9IvbLhk/s1600/airbnb.png" imageanchor="1" sab="297" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQokp1F5YVKJCAn5ztDbewNntPsGTk4-9KjwK8IgAzp4t2GaSpNfO1OInG3BuzvWOkAwiBgbFf0WHX3bCI-5ryT_uiJwl8V4nZTESt1RucI9BHfI2rQR3Rj6G_Y7QP9IvbLhk/s1600/airbnb.png" sab="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off, let me dispel the notion that Airbnb is an inexpensive way to go. Not in my travels. These are apartments that have been purchased (or moved out of) for the exact purpose of hiring out as many nights as possible. Sure, it may have started as a way to make a dollar off that extra room in somebody's apartment, but that isn't what it's becoming. It's a business, and not one you have to become a hotelier to enter. </div>
<div class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As in everything, you get what you pay for. I need to sleep 4. A kitchen. A decent standard of cleanliness - though not perfect, more on this below. And the better the location, the higher the price tag. People aren't giving away their apartments for you to sleep in, and the owner knows well what that apartment is worth. Probably better than you do, if you're a traveler in an unfamiliar city. </div>
<div class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That said I like what you get by staying in a private apartment. A kitchen, first of all, so you can avoid the crappy breakfast buffets that have become the bane of American hotel existence. Kids may like the idea of pouring their own waffles, eating them on a Styrofoam plate with goopy syrup squeezed out of a packet, but not me.</div>
<div class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" sab="330" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="left" class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" sab="296" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Other amenities such as TV, wifi, cable - you can pick out all that from the listing - and I have experienced good wifi and bad, just like at the hotels I've stayed in. Local knowledge is a plus, and I found if I had specific questions - best public transportation to take from the airport, for example - I could get informed, accurate help via email or a phone call in advance of arrival. Sometimes when you call a hotel, you wind up at a call center in Omaha and the person wouldn't know Bart transit from Bart Simpson.</div>

How do you get in? Does the "host" wait for your arrival on the doorstep? Not hardly. Almost exclusively we found the properties made use of a lockbox to which you receive the code some time in advance of your stay. <br />
<div sab="299">
</div>
<div sab="299">
Upon a gate, under a stair, in a fork of wrought iron, beside a potted tulip, you will find something like this. Which works great, except when you're about to arrive, and you still haven't gotten the code.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This occasioned one urgent email saying "Call me! Won't be on the internet again before arrival." Really, people can take the whole smartphone, always on, instant communication thing a little too far. So we got the call shortly thereafter and it all worked out.</div>

I personally am not looking for a perfectly spotless fridge or pantry when I arrive. I think it's great not to have to buy everything new for only a few days stay. Will I use somebody else's catsup? You bet. Or there Sri Racha sauce? Even better.</div>
<div sab="300" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Especially welcome is coffee in the cupboard, spices, sugar, all those sorts of things. I guess I draw the line at half a deli container of potato salad. That probably oughta go in the trash. But to each his own. If you want to buy it all new, you can.</div>

<div sab="300" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Along those lines a further comment about cleanliness. All the places we stayed were to a clean enough standard for this traveler. Airbnb includes a cleaning fee on each rental, and I'm sure many of the places had a service come in like clockwork on the day of departure. OTOH reading the reviews of places we stayed there were clearly dissenters, people who were disappointed, dismayed, ranting and raving and proving yet again that you can't please all the people all the time. Did they not know that San Francisco is an _old_ city? That those same endearing bay windows may not open? Or may not have double glazing, and on and on. </div>

The US has such opulence. Still. But there is also a decay around the edges that is unmistakable. Maybe it hits me in the face a bit more having been away. A lot of it is the kind of gradual thing that occurs over time - the weeds creep upward, the trash collects under the freeway overpass, the concrete crumbles.<br />
<br />
The two gateway points to the Pacific are Los Angeles and San Francisco. I spent some time walking, and driving, around these two cities, on my last two visits. Instead of giving you a pic of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Transamerica building, let's talk about what it really looks like. We flew into Oakland and caught transport to SF. The view out from the freeway, pretty much all the way to the bay bridge, was an eye-popping display of urban blight. The odd burned out building looms beside the freeway, windows are barred, fences high and barb wired.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX9jbki2V9qt6KAyDa8IpdQHTzxs9U2qqPoQEY3_YpotjEQuW_bKB9J5qXQAUuAmLt1tpzmwAxORR24m97HWmgwF_W1Bg5JUN7tZIpkKkAFypvfdTH0dAQkxDLRAOBDgpQExo/s1600/oakland2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX9jbki2V9qt6KAyDa8IpdQHTzxs9U2qqPoQEY3_YpotjEQuW_bKB9J5qXQAUuAmLt1tpzmwAxORR24m97HWmgwF_W1Bg5JUN7tZIpkKkAFypvfdTH0dAQkxDLRAOBDgpQExo/s1600/oakland2.png" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I can't speak for the full extent of it, but this part of California is no yellow brick road through a field of daisies. To someone coming from a smaller, greener world, it's an assault upon the senses. One wonders if the locals notice it, see that nature, though not an attractive version of it, is taking the city back. In San Fran, I stayed mostly around Golden Gate Park, in the Richmond and Sunset districts. It's hard to believe that some of these shabby dwellings, without a patch of grass and in semi-disrepair, command prices in the neighborhood of $1.5M. Now that's real estate gone mad.<br />
<br />
I picked that photo to make a point, but now I'll go for a random drop down into Google maps<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghq9HO_YJL6R4nc5Lf0j9KUchhQRtqIteZdUNbdw9QEawh89NsdgoYlHBpVHMQMo12_lg0R0wulZGk1ejOl5ZdjT7Af9r8bkLhFWRDtQCI_UHRQbLIwgGOaugIuoulpdQP6yQ/s1600/oakland.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghq9HO_YJL6R4nc5Lf0j9KUchhQRtqIteZdUNbdw9QEawh89NsdgoYlHBpVHMQMo12_lg0R0wulZGk1ejOl5ZdjT7Af9r8bkLhFWRDtQCI_UHRQbLIwgGOaugIuoulpdQP6yQ/s1600/oakland.png" height="144" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This one pretty much sums up the balance. Nice pine trees. Interspersed with ever present tagging, chain fencing and a mix of scrub weed and brown, dying fauna. I know, it's a drought. Just walk through SF to Japantown. You'll know when you get there because suddenly the public spaces are well tended, even if it's zeroscape and rock garden.<br />
<br />
And this mix of beauty and the beast pretty much follows on our drive up the coast. The fabulous redwood forests, so grand and ancient, give way to a small town where we spend the night, Garberville, CA. The local paper describes the current happening: citizens are gathering for a town meeting to discuss no access to law enforcement, and deteriorating sense of public safety. Folks don't feel secure, and they want the sheriff! One imagines reading similar headlines a hundred or more years ago. I believe this link is discussing the matter: <a href="http://www.change.org/petitions/estelle-fennell-provide-24-7-law-enforcement-coverage-in-southern-humboldt" target="_blank">Garberville petition</a><br />
<br />
At dusk I walk to the local grocery to pick up dinner, glad that I've come alone. Clusters of people along the way, hanging out on the sidewalk or park areas. I am mostly not threatened by this scene, but I'm a 200 lb guy, and I can see where a person might be. One has the sense that a giant sequoia, a thousand years old already, has been around long before the area's current travails, and it may well be around long after. I promise in my next post to give a more upbeat account, as there was much to like on the trip, as well as to discuss AirBnB which we used to handle lodging during some of this trip.<br />

I was reading a blog post by David Stockman on a topic that I have long been mulling over. And that is the good, the bad and the ugly of reported rates of inflation.<br />
<br />
The good would be the amount of inflation that is considered desirable, widely assumed to be in the vicinity of 2%, the bad would be the numbers as reported by one of several official government organs, and bad because those numbers are open to all manner of manipulation and thus second-guessing, and the ugly, the actual rate of inflation as experienced by we the people.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwZDXsNZbOWfJpv18HvBUyDej5w0m2KOGUg56s_eoD0nJgvEyB_9xd5UtUrGmV3StDt1cbr8PLmUlmj1i3j7r8tAJJqsVhFOJCLdXQiTK7-_gMdGW4qZBTT8M8PAfmLJFTcOU/s1600/elec.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwZDXsNZbOWfJpv18HvBUyDej5w0m2KOGUg56s_eoD0nJgvEyB_9xd5UtUrGmV3StDt1cbr8PLmUlmj1i3j7r8tAJJqsVhFOJCLdXQiTK7-_gMdGW4qZBTT8M8PAfmLJFTcOU/s1600/elec.png" /></a></div>

<br />
It so happens that I have my very own database of this sort of information - because I keep such things around on the off chance I might one day need it :-)<br />
<br />
<br />

<td>I have had the same electric company for 6 years now, and I dug back through the pile to the first bill in February of 2008: $17.70 per kwh. Then I compared that to the bill from Febrary of 2014: $25.615
</td>

<br />
The rest is just plugging in to an online calculator. In a CAGR calculator that's 6.35% (the UGLY) well higher than Stockman's calculated 4.5% for the decade from 2004-5.<br />
<br />
As it turns out, it has been a steady march,<br />
Feb 2008: 17.70<br />
Jan 2009: 19.558<br />
Jan 2010: 19.558<br />
Jan 2011: 21.306<br />
Jan 2013: 23.299<br />
Jan 2014: 25.615<br />
<br />
which shows how the frog boils in the water, because I hadn't pulled out and studied the numbers behind the amount owing, and who really has time to?<br />
<br />
To take it a step further, the BLS has a nice inflation (official inflation, see BAD above).<br />
http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm<br />
<br />
According to this <a href="http://inflationdata.com/Inflation/Inflation_Calculators/Cumulative_Inflation_Calculator.aspx" target="_blank">cumulative inflation calculator</a>, from Feb 2008 to Jan 2014 the official cumulative rate would be 10.50%. Indeed the BAD over at the BLS give you their official<a href="http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm" target="_blank"> CPI inflation calculator</a> which says $17.70 in 2008 would be $19.43 in 2014.<br />
<br />
That's 19.43, at the official rate.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Not 25.615.<br />
<br />
10.5% at the official cumulative rate over these 6 years.<br />
Not 44.7%<br />

We went with a couple of friends, Gavin and Jackson, for the day. I had to fly over in the afternoon because I had a school exam in the morning while dad and Andrew took the ferry in the morning. Luckily I knew a couple of people on the plane so I was able to get a ride with them in to town. At around 4 that day we all met up for some late lunch and then proceeded on to the game.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjju05c8kqT72Q3IxSnpitwPsTa026TrKgBg849Wuq014I_ky7A9w78WkJmn9p2iOsqxxceLGeEKxAeXUtIvOEo22upMRQkz5UzoAj5PICIEo9R10zX9QWRqfDFMC7F1FDwgV6Izg/s1600/nov2013+017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjju05c8kqT72Q3IxSnpitwPsTa026TrKgBg849Wuq014I_ky7A9w78WkJmn9p2iOsqxxceLGeEKxAeXUtIvOEo22upMRQkz5UzoAj5PICIEo9R10zX9QWRqfDFMC7F1FDwgV6Izg/s320/nov2013+017.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The All Whites were at a huge disadvantage having lost 5-1 in the opening fixture, but that didn't stop the NZ fans support. Thousands of people lined the streets in the procession to the stadium.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhngp0aouwO7zv2lani8ZkS7tGjSdw_OTY8bvD65Rbbfr7RS6bFobvg_GpljMRxtc_xbr46Jf87qvcEBi7t5GiwJUWPcNtWZLHe48Hd3fG249-k1YYeSHUQxzmTelJ3oAtYwYzR2g/s1600/nov2013+021.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhngp0aouwO7zv2lani8ZkS7tGjSdw_OTY8bvD65Rbbfr7RS6bFobvg_GpljMRxtc_xbr46Jf87qvcEBi7t5GiwJUWPcNtWZLHe48Hd3fG249-k1YYeSHUQxzmTelJ3oAtYwYzR2g/s320/nov2013+021.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We got to the stadium pretty early to see the players warm up and the stadium was only a bit full when we got there, but by the kick off time it was packed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
New Zealand came out on attack but in the opening 30 minutes conceded 3 goals. The support was getting pretty silent, but the All Whites staged a little comeback at the end and scored two goals to the delight of the supporters. The final score was NZ 2 Mexico 4, but even though we lost it was a great trip and fun was had by all.</div>

The rest of us got to wander down to the water's edge and spectate.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/9326824/Strict-conditions-for-big-ships-visit" target="_blank">news reports</a> this was the biggest ship ever to come in for a refit. I knew things were unusual when I woke up, checked out the window and saw one of the tugs shooting spectacular sprays from its firehoses - no pic sorry. This was all a bit of show, but it was enough to make us hop on our bikes and head down for a better look. This first one is the lead tug entering what is known locally as "the cut":<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqffjz6CGrlS_u0z7UM1rLMUqOEqhJCsanVecY68N5MHFbADGdixtVME-mD3jLn7YmWGDiRxmg6bYTFcgVzAv8yqUPU9zcg4HWnWF7tTKpgrdZLzwlZtwVxIeR07KZO2aEwEU/s1600/20131028_102021.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqffjz6CGrlS_u0z7UM1rLMUqOEqhJCsanVecY68N5MHFbADGdixtVME-mD3jLn7YmWGDiRxmg6bYTFcgVzAv8yqUPU9zcg4HWnWF7tTKpgrdZLzwlZtwVxIeR07KZO2aEwEU/s320/20131028_102021.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am told that tug is here from Singapore, and you can see that our own tug, the little black and white fellow, looks like a toy beside it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghEHq67NBDdeR5VB3lOmiRsEZUEE96JifBXO1hKL0ciDtFZbjFiHPKqJczVSFHOEvNHz7IqVGyugEQaAIyGpknhZ-R9eWfKTMpIr6yF3vecGMykoPQVAHNG9a9rRa-R-mCz5Y/s1600/20131028_102100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghEHq67NBDdeR5VB3lOmiRsEZUEE96JifBXO1hKL0ciDtFZbjFiHPKqJczVSFHOEvNHz7IqVGyugEQaAIyGpknhZ-R9eWfKTMpIr6yF3vecGMykoPQVAHNG9a9rRa-R-mCz5Y/s320/20131028_102100.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There is an equally large tug at the back, facing the other way, which perhaps gave the Boatshed and other restaurants at water's edge a bit more piece of mind should the wind kick up. You can see some tight navigation as the Raroa passes just above one of the principal channel markers.<br />

OK. What do all these have in common? Well... they are all possible solutions that Andrew's<a href="http://www.fpsnz.co.nz/" target="_blank"> Future Problem Solving</a> group has come up with in order to increase the safety of the current future scene they are working on, in which cars are driven by ADS (Automated Driving System) and all cars are made and governed by an international consortium managed by the U.N. Here this team worked on the problem of the system's difficulty in detecting small objects.<br />
<br />
Underground tunnels, while perhaps excellent at keeping pedestrians out of the roadway, rated poorly in terms of cost/efficiency, environment and health effects. Lots of pent up exhaust fumes.<br />
<br />
Red lines, Software, and heat sensors were the top rated solutions according to criteria chosen by the students. Red lines being the most cost effective but least aesthetically pleasing. Software is a game-based solution designed to educate young children in road safety.<br />
<br />
We have been having fun with this, and as Dean has been participating in FPS for several years now, he has been mentoring this younger team. Recently we went to Australia, we did plenty of cool things but one of the definite highlights was going to the Tangaroa Zoo in Sydney. When we got there and it was amazing we were first in line so we got in really quickly and immediately got lost. We wanted to make to the bird show at 11 and we were in the zoo at about 10:45 so that didn't give us very much time. We rushed and ended up by the elephants but eventually we found our way to the bird show. The bird show was pretty cool we had parakeets chirping and doing tricks, hawks swooping right over our heads and a naughty owl that refused to do it's trick but eventually it was done and we had to move on. Dean soon realised that he was hungry so we had to stop to stop him from extensively complaining. After a 30 minute break we found our selves watching the gorillas, which was by far the most interesting they were fighting each other, running around and pounding there chests we spent around an hour there. we then explored all around the zoo seeing things like wombats, kangaroos, red pandas, crocodiles and even a platypus after spending the bulk of our day there (It was now about 5:30) we had to leave we really enjoyed our time there. here are some pictures of the animals. We did many interesting things but by far the funnest was on the first day when we went to the sky tower. It was dizzying to look up at let alone look down from epecially for mum who was very tentative...<br />

But it was understandable when you see what type of height we were at.</div>

The food was nice but the views were even better. he sky tower is definitely one of the best places to go in New Zealand and maybe even one of the best places to in the world. It was awesome.</div>

<br />
After reading the outcome of the election in Venezuela, I am again struck by the comparison of democracy for that much vilified country/leader and our own in the United States.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://venezuelanalysis.com/analysis/7341" target="_blank">Hugo Chavez won reelection with an 80% voter turnout</a>, amidst an absence of reported fraud or any other measures of disenfranchisement. The election was held on a Sunday, and alcohol sales were banned on the day, a measure which seems to promote the sober consideration and conduct of one's civic duty. <br />
<br />
Meanwhile the U.S. mainstream press was enjoying the possibility of a Chavez upset, and it was widely reported that Henrique Capriles was a strong contender with a chance of winning. The most common explanation offered by the legion of Chavez detractors is that Chavez buys off his citizens with the country's oil wealth, and he uses this money and media time to his own advantage during the election. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RTfsGzVko9sgY4Obiw8vQ37c0IoL6xwP-_QviyuPdlLM1O2Eo8OqapIJJ9E_zh2BoB0KjxT8LTgnQ77SSebdDlanaKE-ZKU72cHBuRlrv0ZzYO_YQCzRrL1vPctegvNjAh8/s1600/hugo-chavez_1296303c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RTfsGzVko9sgY4Obiw8vQ37c0IoL6xwP-_QviyuPdlLM1O2Eo8OqapIJJ9E_zh2BoB0KjxT8LTgnQ77SSebdDlanaKE-ZKU72cHBuRlrv0ZzYO_YQCzRrL1vPctegvNjAh8/s320/hugo-chavez_1296303c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I don't know how true or untrue this is in the case of Venezuela. Chavez has certainly poured oil money into programs for the poor, and not just at election time. Really, is the United States able point the finger at anyone else regarding the influence of money in elections? <br />
<br />
Allow me to point out an unpleasant fact about elections in the city where I used to live: Houston, TX. The mayor of Houston is often elected with voting totals below 10% of the voting population. Let me repeat that, or let me be specific, in the most recent election in which Anise Parker won reelection, Parker won the election with between 5 and 10 percent of the vote - but closer to 5!<br />
<br />
Now it will be reported that she received 50%, or just over. But that is a percentage of the people who voted. And this is nothing new. In her first election she won with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_mayoral_election,_2009" target="_blank">81,743 votes</a> in a city of 4 million people and some 1.3 million eligible voters. <br />
<br />
I am not picking on Anise Parker. Houston has a long history of electing its mayors with less than 10% of the eligible vote. Look back to the 1990's and the days of Bob Lanier up through Bill White in the 2000's. Bill White won in 2007 with 20,000 more votes than Parker, but one shouldn't be elected Mayor of a city of 4 million people with only 100,000 votes!<br />
<br />
Now you can blame this on voter turnout - it's the peoples' own fault. But I put forth that you could start by not holding the election on a weekday, where people have to sandwich a vote into their before-work-rush, or maybe their lunch hour? What is the practical reality of someone who commutes for an hour to the office, making it back to their home polling station to vote at lunch, or after work before the polling stations close? Hmmm.... maybe if the election were held on a non-workday... and I can bet you this: if no alcohol sales were allowed on the day - you'd get a higher turnout of citizens eager to vote about something!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgyf97tWtbpFNbcL5tb5WBxWnoIh4wjNDz16piifvBlA_hFFTeMH32IM3nsrx7R0bJEpTQur8oi8pYSY-cmAcr6JpFipX-OaBPc30PJPZhi6djs2YgDm2mQRs3-79KeErlS3k/s1600/anise%2520parker%2520x3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgyf97tWtbpFNbcL5tb5WBxWnoIh4wjNDz16piifvBlA_hFFTeMH32IM3nsrx7R0bJEpTQur8oi8pYSY-cmAcr6JpFipX-OaBPc30PJPZhi6djs2YgDm2mQRs3-79KeErlS3k/s320/anise%2520parker%2520x3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
One last comment while we're discussing voting. Prior to the Houston mayoral election the 11 News/KUHF poll was reporting that Peter Brown was ahead of Parker by a commanding 8% (margin of error + - 4%) . Yet Brown finished a distant third. So polling is not always what it seems, nor is an election win, and nor is the much vaunted term democracy.Duanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16153402580228913663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6541565.post-23778446401701797032012-09-28T17:07:00.001-07:002012-09-28T17:07:33.842-07:00Fifa 13 is out!<br />

<br />
Beyond the generic stuff mentioned, there is a long list of cool.Duanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16153402580228913663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6541565.post-38715172339032376002012-09-12T20:02:00.002-07:002012-09-12T20:02:44.022-07:00It's been a while and I guess it's time for a geeky post, so ya'll will just have to bear with me. Want to get some notes out there for those in need--<br />
<br />
The problem of the day was how to clone Server 2008 R2 at minimal cost. This is a dev workstation and the unfortunate part of using the server OS is that everyone's imaging tools wind up costing an arm and a leg. Take Acronis for example. True Image is maybe $50 for Windows 7, but for 2008 you get to use the server product for $859. We find that a little steep to clone a workstation.<br />
<br />
I also have a copy of EZ-GIG which I have used to great effect to clone laptop drives with Win XP thru Win 7 but they too take a pass on 2008. <br />
<br />
Well as I repeatedly struck out, I did actually give it a go with DriveImage XML to be sure that it didn't "just work" w Server 2008, and guess what? It didn't go well. What to do... what to do... and I realized I had a couple of 500 GB drives sitting around, and several available SATA connectors inside the trusty Dell T3400. And this is what worked:<br />
<br />
1. Put in a spare drive<br />
2. Fire up Windows Server Backup and make a one-time, custom backup. WSB offers a System State option, and a Bare metal recovery option. I chose Bare metal, which as you see in the pic includes System state and the entire C: drive. You could back up and include additional drives at this step, or not, as you wish. This backup operation took about 20 min, for those who are worried about efficiency, but I'm sure time will vary greatly depending on how big your C: drive is, hardware, and the other usual variables.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_3CByhYE1YHOf60Q0vnG7t1XR6QrmH1zUONDeoyPA2NJqfo-8Qc0Em-qcEm-Svvd2jIuaxOn4a7KS8k1TD0XP_zsI_WwCQF9BHFKUQAUWt4z3rzVGfOkU1LHhKpMH0H9XOQ/s1600/WSB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="194" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_3CByhYE1YHOf60Q0vnG7t1XR6QrmH1zUONDeoyPA2NJqfo-8Qc0Em-qcEm-Svvd2jIuaxOn4a7KS8k1TD0XP_zsI_WwCQF9BHFKUQAUWt4z3rzVGfOkU1LHhKpMH0H9XOQ/s320/WSB.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. This was the fun bit, that originally did not occur to me but became very obvious as I went along: unplug the original C: drive and substitute my second spare drive. Slap in the original Server 2008 boot DVD. Boot to DVD and choose Repair, then select the option to restore from a WSB backup. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Note that at this point I have two drives connected, one empty and one with my WSB backup from step two. Allow the restore operation to complete, which will take about as long as the backup took to begin with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When done, move the restored drive over to its new home. Boot without attaching to the network. This final step is important if you're going to be using both machines on the same network, want to change the computer name and personalize your new clone - </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. At the command prompt navigate to C:\windows\system32\sysprep and run the sysprep tool with the Generalize option. This looks like the following:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4CDkan_pXdKRXvQNRLOmggJc9TGGg0MVM1UUtvRqtuVTsNKFqZWpBIIsgmGTMNbXhZV782yK91YGhSSU8Lnww9-DF07gPLhulrO6mtMdI4uwo_fvrgRayOBwaNfoJvNMCKec/s1600/sysprep.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4CDkan_pXdKRXvQNRLOmggJc9TGGg0MVM1UUtvRqtuVTsNKFqZWpBIIsgmGTMNbXhZV782yK91YGhSSU8Lnww9-DF07gPLhulrO6mtMdI4uwo_fvrgRayOBwaNfoJvNMCKec/s320/sysprep.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Reboot a final time and you have a generic cloned image of your Server 2008 machine. I guess the drawback over a true cloning operation is that cloning disk to disk is one operation, whereas this method requires two operations, and therefore twice the time. But here's the advantage - it works and it's free.</div>

We were over in Wellington this weekend as B was on display at the NZ Art Show. The NZ film festival is also on, and we were lucky enough to throw a dart at the guide and take in <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2125608/">Searching for Sugar Man</a>. Highly Recommended *****. It's docos like this that will keep us going back and willing to take a chance, more than making up for last year's debacle The Tree of Life. </div>

Each trip over we explore the fabulous Welly a bit more - this time a side trip over to Lyall Bay and a quick bite at the yummy Elements Cafe. Here are a couple of updated pics of the boys.</div>

We all rushed downstairs wondering what to do. We decided that in case of an earthquake that was near us the safest things to do would be to go under the dining room table or to go outside. Luckily nobody was harmed in Nelson and it was 230km deep so it wasn't nearly as bad as anything that happened in Christchurch, no damage was done apart from the occasional item falling off the shelves in the grocery store. With the big 7.0 nobody even realized that there was an aftershock, it was a measly 4.6 magnitude at the same depth 70km south of Opunake. To find out more visit<br />

Again. Last time was a couple of years ago in the spring. We got hit by some fierce wind and, well, we didn't make it. This time we are older, wiser, fitter? and we are going the full monty from Clyde to Middlemarch. Highly recommended outing for kiwis and visitors alike.<br />

First night at the Lauder Hotel. Good to get day one under our belts, saddles, whatever, and practice our cup stacking in the local pub where Andrew holds the record for holding his hands on the frozen beer tap. He's a polar bear. And it's a good thing, because the mornings are a bit <i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">cold</span></i>.<br /><br />

School in New Zealand is fun.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in">I am ambivalent about a lot of things as far as living in New Zealand goes. But, I have no doubt that Dean and Andrew are having an amazing school experience. I am loath to compare the US system with NZ. It's just not fair; it's apples to oranges. The mantra I always invoke is 4.3 versus 311 million people - that pretty much explains everything. Nonetheless, here I live on this little island in the middle of nowhere. And, because of the numbers and the natural beauty of this country, our kids get a school experience very different from the one they would have had in America.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in">Every other year New Zealand school children go on a camp. This begins as early as Year 4 (which is third grade) and continues through their "college" (high school) years. Andrew's camp was at a hut abutting Abel Tasman Park. Kids sleep in bunks, 4 to a room (probably a lot like US summer camp).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>The teacher, an administrator and some volunteer parents join the trip – we're in a separate bunkhouse and we even got our own rooms!</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in">I had the pleasure of spending two nights with Andrew's class. Once we settled at Marahau the first thing the kids did was change into their togs (swimsuits) and throw themselves into the sea. It doesn't matter that the water is in the low 60s, air temperature mid 60s maybe. That's what they do. We spent the day swimming (even me) collecting sea creatures, building sand castles and just having fun. At night we played games, had a bonfire and made s'mores. Everyone went to bed happy and tired.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in">Next day we took the kids on a 14k hike (that's 8.4 miles). Not bad for 9 – 11 year olds. Now, don't think they are all gunning to go. Even though sport is a major focus here, for some kids this was the farthest they'd ever had to walk and it was hard work. It didn't help that it was raining. But, I thought it was really cool that we did it despite the rain.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>We took a water taxi back from Anchorage which made it all worth it, even for the most reluctant trampers. </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in">What I saw in this camp was amazing. While there's lots of fun and games, there's also work and a building of personal responsibility and community. The kids help prepare meals, clean bathrooms, sweep floors and do their own dishes. They are expected to keep their rooms tidy. But, they also get to laugh and run around freely. They see their teacher, their principal and some lucky parents in a new environment. I had the pleasure of getting to know kids I might not otherwise meet (especially the girls). </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in">As I reflect on school here, I sometimes worry that it's not rigorous enough, that there's not enough homework. Too much play and not enough work! I wonder whether our boys will be adequately prepared for university and the big, bad world. I am assured that capable Kiwis leave the system and thrive as adults. And, when I go to Andrew's school and see all the kids outside laughing and playing; when I think maybe they are getting to be kids just a little bit longer than they would have in Texas, when I have the assurance that they are happy, I feel good. I know that they will be just fine.</p>Barbarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17061167221617637589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6541565.post-458011320836197142011-11-20T18:56:00.000-08:002011-11-20T19:03:40.234-08:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLTaHGNVVILkFca0n0Pr73Y4RpF5D6p328KTWjwQI6UBK-388H1pU2USmZH9sxEeOqJQq2obXA4ZAZT0kAwJ5jEpqvHtMjtR7MGYUmoAfSPI4MYxqmwvpMo4A8BoNVuOGffk0/s1600/dynamo.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 284px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 178px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677279376032053810" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLTaHGNVVILkFca0n0Pr73Y4RpF5D6p328KTWjwQI6UBK-388H1pU2USmZH9sxEeOqJQq2obXA4ZAZT0kAwJ5jEpqvHtMjtR7MGYUmoAfSPI4MYxqmwvpMo4A8BoNVuOGffk0/s320/dynamo.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div>Go Dynamo!!!!!</div><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><div></div>Duanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16153402580228913663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6541565.post-64373229182249912352011-11-19T20:25:00.000-08:002011-11-19T20:43:22.421-08:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ8Ugq2i0osOpdinFhzX2PbSbOUimfzdMI19SfTQa4gdrbWqUjdkB8YxBe8jFbJ-srCBnZ1r9VQsRWih637N1nqH0wvPVpAGb4XEOF0XJk41rGGctYNms-NX6faaJ4nkDXv5k/s1600/spuds1.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5676932566607999330" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ8Ugq2i0osOpdinFhzX2PbSbOUimfzdMI19SfTQa4gdrbWqUjdkB8YxBe8jFbJ-srCBnZ1r9VQsRWih637N1nqH0wvPVpAGb4XEOF0XJk41rGGctYNms-NX6faaJ4nkDXv5k/s320/spuds1.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>Remember these beds prepped <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHPE3_YAUqg3s08fgksR7V4AwVw_e-Vrv67dzN2mIFBvzg5QgSptQrjgHvKR6MyrR_tOOZayT5g9jmT6i-Pb1Pl9X5EeKsQhxwz13vQO-3e9Dv19dDjUwcuDR55eXC7x7hhwc/s1600/Jun+2011+potato+patch+4.jpg">here</a> on June 26: </div><br /><br /><div>The soil could have used longer to set up, but we had a trip planned so I went ahead and popped in seed potatoes on Sept 4. At the start we didn't want to go on a lot of the rides so we decided to ride one of the less scary ''coasters'' called the Sierra Sidewinder which is where you spin on a roller coaster, It was quick and easy.<br />After that all the rides were closed off until 11:00 so mum and I rode the screamin' swing one of the scariest we rode.Then we<br />rode the classic log flume.After that I can't really remember what we did but I will explain some pictures below.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM9bNPDyN4s-7WdxE5jFTkLeT9t6wckUrFU3ocm8N7-2K32lyp6FQeBO6FOtFXxV7zxMO5P7dTuojMZY5vsBa5wo9A_sezPmLGxFwkHqciEAUqMu2gURlhi2PTdP6nwHPckzg/s1600/usa+114.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 218px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 163px; CURSOR: pointer" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658025761586612354" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM9bNPDyN4s-7WdxE5jFTkLeT9t6wckUrFU3ocm8N7-2K32lyp6FQeBO6FOtFXxV7zxMO5P7dTuojMZY5vsBa5wo9A_sezPmLGxFwkHqciEAUqMu2gURlhi2PTdP6nwHPckzg/s200/usa+114.jpg" /></a> Sierra Sidewinder<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxL8vVdcsR2YvxZZk4T0g6rflnGG-R1-STVTpjB9hI6acPFMtHbL55RTSHHAlgZqkWZVgzTuJk8clf35tGsgNSX8waSZd8jMRNPn3RTdyN1bMNXfoMXyMLypv26XR6qobYQ6A/s1600/usa+120.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 150px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658030266333012642" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxL8vVdcsR2YvxZZk4T0g6rflnGG-R1-STVTpjB9hI6acPFMtHbL55RTSHHAlgZqkWZVgzTuJk8clf35tGsgNSX8waSZd8jMRNPn3RTdyN1bMNXfoMXyMLypv26XR6qobYQ6A/s200/usa+120.jpg" /></a> Screamin' Swing<br /><br />The ultimate rocket powered swing<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfws9FV47qwCi_qB5H5pacNLfTjaDtFCk_Yv7t-H92W3Q0NioNjiTz82UyPi215GtrGBNavUjKWDVaQOe3JX-H7vieuQED_eFQszW30_MZuRIf6uAzohu7ccySwzy2xQitE8E/s1600/usa+118.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658030146649362946" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfws9FV47qwCi_qB5H5pacNLfTjaDtFCk_Yv7t-H92W3Q0NioNjiTz82UyPi215GtrGBNavUjKWDVaQOe3JX-H7vieuQED_eFQszW30_MZuRIf6uAzohu7ccySwzy2xQitE8E/s200/usa+118.jpg" /></a> ''Life as a hotdog''<br /><br />Andrew Franklet<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjECsKxN2pzTuDKY8KqFx0HZKk9aYu66-vf5mCTXrw12aryPnYuDgQFlEH8Qa8oGCh1L7khOobaoUGxrBoO6FijOUnF11R7Ri4xNQr9816fZncD1ob-j6Y6lZ_6nD6v3H9jrPo/s1600/usa+127.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 150px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658032009366005026" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjECsKxN2pzTuDKY8KqFx0HZKk9aYu66-vf5mCTXrw12aryPnYuDgQFlEH8Qa8oGCh1L7khOobaoUGxrBoO6FijOUnF11R7Ri4xNQr9816fZncD1ob-j6Y6lZ_6nD6v3H9jrPo/s200/usa+127.jpg" /></a>we also rode the following Pony express, Silver bullet, Dragon swing, La Revolucion, Waveswinger, Bigfoot rapids, Boomerang, Windseeker, Jaguar and we watched a cowboy stunt show.<br />AndrewAndrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00324795028591177653noreply@blogger.com0
